Syston, Leicestershire (February 11th, 2020) -- We were honoured to host Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall this week on a visit to our factory in Syston, Leicestershire. The occasion was commemorated by the unveiling of a plaque, signing of the visitor’s book and presentation of gifts from The Cambridge Satchel Company.
On the tour of the factory, our Founder and CEO of The Cambridge Satchel Company, Julie Deane OBE, introduced our team members who are involved in the design and manufacturing process. With an output of over 8,000 bags per month and global brand recognition, we believe The Cambridge Satchel Company illustrates what UK brands can achieve through entrepreneurship combined with a passion for traditional craftsmanship.
During the tour, Their Royal Highnesses witnessed each stage of the making process - closely following the journey of a bag from a single leather hide to a finished satchel. At the time of the visit, a special collection of bags created to support The Prince’s Foundation were being made and His Royal Highness embossed one of the bags using a vintage blocking and embossing press.
We are proud to be working with The Prince’s Foundation to create a collection of iconic satchels and others styles with 20 percent of the RRP of each bag sold being donated to help support the invaluable work on the Foundation. The Prince’s Foundation is a charity dedicated to achieving HRH The Prince of Wales’s ambition of creating harmonious communities through education, practice and places.
At the end of the tour, our founder, Julie, was honoured to invite Their Royal Highnesses to take tea with our company colleagues. Her Royal Highness cut a commemorative cake – a life-size 15” Batchel in Cambridge Blue.
Commenting on the visit Julie said: “I was delighted to be able to show Their Royal Highnesses the excellent work of our highly skilled team at our factory in Syston. This very special visit shines a spotlight on British style and craftsmanship that is displayed through our extensive product collection. We are proud to have supported British craftsmanship for over a decade and we continue to champion artisanal leather techniques – something we know HRH The Prince of Wales is a passionate advocate of.’’
Our honorary CSC staff member Edgar the Pug met with TRHs while wearing his HRH Prince of Wales tartan check coat.
HRH The Prince of Wales was presented with a bespoke canvas and leather Gardening Bag and leather Highland Cow Key Charm. HRH The Duchess of Cornwall was presented with a small Traveller Bag crafted in Harris Tweed and Brandy colour leather, The Doctors Bag in French Grey and a Bee Key Charm.
The visit took place six years after HRH The Prince of Wales awarded Julie Deane an OBE for Services to Entrepreneurship, having started The Cambridge Satchel Company from her kitchen table in 2008 with just £600 and a passion for British style and craftsmanship.
